CoServ scholarship winners forge paths to success

Six years later, Corinne Griffin still remembers the day CoServ burst into her Aubrey High School classroom with balloons to announce she’d won a $5,000 scholarship.

“I was completely surprised. There’s a picture of me and when I look at it my mouth is just completely open,” Corinne said, laughing.

“It was a great surprise because it allowed me to afford Texas Tech and it meant that there were other people who believed in me,” Corinne said.

That belief proved to be well founded as she graduated with honors from Texas Tech University in just three years. Then, in May, she graduated with a Juris Doctor from the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University, also in three years. She plans to start practicing law in Dallas starting this fall.

CoServ has that same belief in the seven 2024 scholarship recipients.

The Colony High School graduate Katherine Mejia enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard so she could graduate college with no debt.

She will attend boot camp, followed by medic training in San Antonio and airborne school in Georgia.

She plans to complete her training by the fall of 2025 and then attend Texas Woman’s University’s nursing program. Because she will have her EMT license, she will be ahead of her classmates. Upon graduation from TWU, she plans to become a traveling nurse and finish her six-year commitment to the National Guard, which includes possible overseas deployments and response to disasters.

“We are thrilled to help these outstanding graduates with a financial boost so they can make their educational dreams come true,” said Whitney Gohlke, CoServ’s Manager of Academic Initiatives. “Corinne and Katherine are great representatives of what this scholarship is all about.”
